1st Lucas Lens de Torres - 5º Salesianos Estrecho
New Year's Eve is one of my favourite holidays of the year, like Christmas, Halloween, and Thanksgiving. But the New Year's celebration is special because the year changes, and you can start over again (if you do something bad), and you can set new goals for yourself, like the following: don't punch your little brother; get good marks; respect your friends; etc. The best part for me about New Year's Eve is the presents, not the grapes (last year I had to go to the hospital because I choked on the grapes). The New Year's toasts are cool, but I can't drink alcohol, so I drink some kind of fruit champagne, but it's so acidic. The champagne is from apples, pears, pineapples, and oranges. When my family and I give a toast, we do it in a loud voice, and we talk about our New Year's resolutions.
2nd Nayra Parrondo Esteban - 5º Salesianos Estrecho
Hello! My name is Nayra and I've got 10 New Year's resolutions for 2020. My first resolution is to get an award for excellent work in math because I'm good at that subject. My second resolution is to avoid arguing with my brother. He's older than I am and we argue a lot. My third resolution is to go to flamenco classes, because it's my favorite music to dance to. My fourth resolution is to take piano lessons. I play the guitar but I want to learn another instrument. My fifth resolution is to save money to go to the United States, because I like that country a lot, and I can learn more English there. I love traveling to other countries in general. My sixth resolution is to tidy up my room more often because it's always very messy. My seventh resolution is to take drama classes because I want to perform in The Lion King. My eighth resolution is to remember to turn off the lights after I brush my teeth. My ninth resolution is to not talk in class because I talk a lot with my classmates. My tenth resolution is to learn to make straight lines in math class. In the first grade of secondary school, we have to make a lot of straight lines but I don't know how.
3rd Anna Rosa McCarthy - 5º Salesianos Estrecho
Do you have any New Year's resolutions? Is there something new you want to start doing in 2020? The New Year is coming and with the holiday season nearly here, many people are thinking of resolutions that will help them to be better people. There can be different types of resolutions. One example is to give more money to charity. Other examples are playing sports, reading or getting better grades. I'm going to do things that will help me and that are difficult for me to do. I'm going to give money to charity and study for at least one hour a day. I'm going to try to do my best. You should probably do the same, because it can be helpful for you and for a lot of other people. You will have lots of fun doing it. You can also combine your New Year's resolutions with your friends and family so you can help each other do it together. I do that every year and it helps me a lot more than you think. For example, last year I barely read and spent too much time watching TV, using my mobile phone, or playing video games. Now I read a lot more because I learned that it is much more interesting than playing any type of video game. What are your New Year's resolutions?
And the winners of the November writing contest are…
1st Lidia Aguado Cosano - 6º Salesianos Estrecho
Hello my name is Lidia, and my favorite sport is athletics. It's my favorite sport because my whole family has always done athletics. It's like a tradition. When I was younger, I saw my brothers and my sister doing it, and I told myself that I would do this sport when I turned 8. I achieved my goal, and now I do athletics regularly. Athletics involves many activities, like the high and long jump, the shot put, and more. My favorite is the long jump because it's what I'm the best at. It's very fun, and it's good for your body because you compete against others like you. You can make friends with other people, and you get medals. There are long-distance runners and sprinters. Long-distance runners don't run as fast as the sprinters, but they run for a long time and cover a lot of distance. They also do cross-country running, which is similar, but it's not on a track. Sprinters are the opposite: they don't run long distances, but they run extremely fast. Competitions on tracks include high and long jumps, and the shot put. Cross-country running can be in nature, but you don't have the necessary material for the other activities. I recommend you try this amazing sport. You will learn many new things.
2nd Javier Leiva - 5º CEU Sanchinarro
Dear The Magazine, sorry for not writing before, but I have been up to my eyes preparing for exams. My favourite sport is football because you help your friends and your teammates. My coach is a very fun and clever person. That's why I like him. My team and I are playing in our city's league. We play against another team of friends. Football is a very social game. I enjoy watching and playing it. I don't like playing football when it's foggy and rainy. My favorite team is Real Madrid because they have won 13 championships. They are an excellent team. Football is a very famous sport, and a lot of people play it. If you don't like football, I can only say that you should try it again. I also practice badminton. It's a fun sport, but for me football is the best sport in the whole world. Football is a very simple name for such a beautiful game. Everyone can learn how to play football. It is easy. My favourite player is Rodrigo because he is a good man inside and outside the stadium. He is an example of a good player. I hope you like football too. Best, Javier
3rd Francisco Ventoso - 2º ESO Santa María del Mar
I am a big fan of sports in general. My favourite sports are football or "soccer", and swimming, but I hate basketball or "netball," and fishing or "angling", because I think they are boring. My favourite football team is Deportivo, which is actually playing very badly now. I play on my school's football team. I'm a defender. Two weeks ago I learnt that there are a lot of sports with very different rules and conditions. For example, rugby is very different from bobsledding. The main difference is that bobsledding is done on ice and rugby is played is on a pitch. There are other differences which are less important. American football is also different from rugby because in rugby you have to play without protection, and in American football it is the opposite. There are sports which use rackets and a ball, like in tennis, or a paddle, like in ping pong. If you love skating you can play hockey or ice hockey, which use sticks and a special ball they call a puck. Ice hockey is on ice and regular hockey is on a court. In my opinion, if you want to be a very good athlete, you have to practice a lot, and make a big effort.
